I have a bed with a footboard & don't do a pillow tuck. I did as you said & made it shorter at the top & made the sides & bottom equal. After I had the center part of the quilt done I laid it on the bed & figured out how much drop I needed on the sides & bottom, then how much more at the top to cover the bed. I made a much shorter border at the top. This is the quilt I'm talking about
