I'm going to guess you are working way to hard on "birthing" a quilt. First, change terminology. All birthing is is turning the inside out so the right side is outside. Personally, I hate the word "birthing". IMO, someone came up with that term simply to make a simple task seem dramatic.

Sew all the way a round the outside edge with the backing and top facing each other, batting attached to either piece. Leave a space one foot or so UNSEWN to turn the sandwich inside out. I generally make rounded corners---marked with a cereal bowl--so I don't have to be so careful with a square corner. Reach in the hole pull out one corner at a time and shake the whole thing out---------------DONE!
