I usually use crochet thread, sometimes embroidery floss. I recall that the Lutheran World Relief quilt program (lwr.org) requests that the quilters NOT use yarn. On the other hand, I remember a grandma telling me that her granddaughter requested yarn for her quilt, so that she could have "those fuzzy things" on it after it was washed.
