I have both and use them all the time. You won't be sorry with either purchase. In fact, the 401A has an advantage over the 500 in that the door covering the needlebar on the 500 often breaks and can't be repaired. You have to be so careful with it.
Then you will have to look at the Singer 301. That is a fantastic machine!
