I used to use the heels of bread to make bread crumbs until I saw my grandmother make a sandwich and turn the heel side of the bread to the inside of the sandwich. Once the sandwich was assembled, you couldn't tell it was a heel. I smacked myself upside the head for not thinking of that!

Here's a funny story... a few years ago, I was making sandwiches for my younger son and myself. My older son walked in and asked me to make him a sandwich, also. When he saw how little bread was left, he insisted that I not give him the "hoof" of the bread, because he doesn't like the hoof. My younger son and I laughed and laughed and laughed!!!
