A lady who teaches quilting told me long ago that diagonal seams in a border are much nicer and less noticeable up to a point. She teaches her students to make a diagonal seam in a border when they are 3"- 3 1/2" wide or less, but on the wider borders, a diagonal seam is as noticeable as a straight seam.
