I have a Whirlpool set, fairly new. You can open the lid using the pause button. I like having a top loader with an agitator. Had to search to find what I wanted, so glad I did.
I have a Maytag and mine has this too. I love the soak feature in mine, it works great. I also love the lock out feature that keeps the kids from opening them machines when they shouldn't. You save on water and soap and electric since it takes less time to wash and also to dry. Even when I put a heavy quilt/bedspread in mine it comes clean.
