That 'old singer' is a 301 or a 404...absolutely cream of the crop for taking to classes. The 301 is 16 pounds, the 404 is only 18. They were aluminum rather than steel. It will say on the front post, the 301 has a side mount bobbin and 404 a drop in... Oh you lucky lucky lucky girl!

I sewed pm a 301 at my mom's (and it is still operational, although probably needs a good cleaning) and my first machine was a 404. I think basically they are the same except that the 404 is a little updated model. Just basic straight stitching with a few attachments for zigzagging and buttonholes.
