I've only heard one semi-good reason to not mix fabrics. A friend of mine mixed a jelly roll of batiks with a regular quilting cotton background and had tension issues when quilting it. It seemed the batiks wanted one tension setting, and the quilting cotton wanted another.

However, having said that, it hasn't stopped me from mixing them!
