I started with the book Jeanne recommended, Twist and Turn Bargello Quilts by Eileen Wright. I read it carefully several times before I started....and part of her instructions say that if you are new to a Bargello, consider making a place mat, which she has in the back of the book. The instructions are very basic and I was able to follow them easily...even though I was scared silly the whole time!! I only made one place mat, though I suspect making four would make more sense; however, doing that taught me the technique and gave me confidence. That was in November last year. Then I made Surf Song, which is also in the book. I gained even more confidence with it.

Long story short, I have now made 7 Bargello quilts. I am hooked. Oh, when I first started, I asked folks on this board for advice. I got wonderful advice. I am going to post this and see if I can find a link to that good advice. I have referred back to it quite often...

Found it! http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...t-t235168.html ...If I copied it correctly....maybe you will find it helpful.
