You are right, Emma! This is a great design lesson!! Now for those of you who like pic #1 the best, let me explain what went wrong in pic 1.
Orange is a great color and when used correctly, it has the ability of bringing out the best in all the colors around it. But in Pic 1, the sashing causes the blocks to RECEDE. Do you see that? It actually competes with what's in the blocks and the blocks go unnoticed. In Pic 2, they are really noticed!
Then in Pic 2, after the grid was topstitched, the sashing RECEDES and the blocks are brought forward!! Don't you love how that grid just pushed the sashing back and brought life to the blocks?
Bright orange is a nice color sashing to use, but if it had been narrower sashing, it would've worked much better in Pic 1. It would not have overpowered the blocks. Whatever you do, you sure don't want the sashing to overtake your work. Nothing will be noticed that way!
