I was one of the ones who took a machine on a carry-on a few years ago. Sounds like you did the right thing. The way they've changed everything, you probably can 't take it on anymore! Although at first they thought mine was a "breathing machine" so it was all right with them. Anyway, $93 isn't bad for getting your machine where it needs to be.
