I just did a 12 inch block using flying geese units and it went together in a jiffy. It is a four patch star and the pattern is on Craftsy for free. You can use charm packs, only other cutting is a 6.5 x 2.5 rectangle. It was super easy, the seams line up beautifully and the end result is very pretty. You could make as many blocks as you need with sashing between.
