I buy 1 1/4 yards of coordinating flannel. I then wash before cutting so I don't have to worry about each piece shrinking at a different rate. I cut them so they are square, round the corners and sew them up. Some times I put a decorative stitch around the edge. They are a little big for a newborn but babies don't stay small for long and 40" square is a good size.
