I saw Elaine (hmm unusal last name that escapes me right now) do a New York Beauty and other variations with a technique she calls "Applicurves". It combines paper piecing and appliqué to make NY Beauty blocks. The book with DVD is on Amazon. I'm going to try it. The pattern above is way beyond my current skill level- hopefully some day.
