0000 steel wool is considered like sandpaper (very fine) it won't harm the wood any more than sandpaper will - unless you get bits broken off embedded in the wood - but that usually does not happen if you've got a smooth surface you are dealing with.

I use it between coats but not for the final polish, as it does take the gloss off the finish.
