Default Need advice from the pros

I made a queen size quilt [trip around the world] for my son 15 years ago. The backing is very thin and has a small tear in the fabric. I had used poly batting which now is very flat. I was thinking of taking the binding off and putting new batting and backing on it and quilting it again.[stitch in the ditch]. Leaving the old batting and backing on. I think the sewing machine will handle the thickness. Do you think this is the way I should go or do think I will run into trouble? How would you save this quilt?
