Pagzz, I think you have a lovely idea. I too was trying to figure out what to suggest that didn't involve rulers ( straight line quilting ) or fancy treatment. I was going to suggest a gentle curve along each edge of the star, but I like yours better. And then she could continue the loops along the diagonals of the blocks in the outer border - maybe every second row, to keep the density similar.

Loopy lines through the strong diagonals once again don't try for perfectly centered and straight. In the border echo your lines and make them ribbons floating around the stars. Practice on paper and then go for it.
