Pagzz, I think you have a lovely idea. I too was trying to figure out what to suggest that didn't involve rulers ( straight line quilting ) or fancy treatment. I was going to suggest a gentle curve along each edge of the star, but I like yours better. And then she could continue the loops along the diagonals of the blocks in the outer border - maybe every second row, to keep the density similar.
