That rule would work if your quilt is not wider than approx 80". In this case, the quilt is very large, 105", which is wider than two widths of fabric: 42" wide x 2= 84" would not be wide enough for this one. I have never made a quilt this large, so your rule of thumb would work for me, but not for this one.
