Another easy way to rip is to skin the quilt. Lift the backing fabric as far as it will go and use the ripper that looks like a curved razor blade to skin the quilt. It's fast.
I was thinking skinning would work as well. I think to put it on a table/bed with weights on it, then start to skin it, the top layer would give something to 'pull' and help the process. I use the curved blade or my tiny rotary cutter to pop threads from the inside next to the batting. I bought a comforter at GW and took it apart easily, ended up with 2 quilt backs*Ü*
Pace yourself and it will be undone in no time.
