I've made pet quilts, large and small, and sold them successfully (some at over $100 depending on size and complexity of pattern). A couple of things worth considering: use fleece on one side and wrap around fleece edges for binding. The fleece is warm and short-haired dogs (and cats) can appreciate that. Also, making bed runners for those dogs/cats who sleep at the foot of the bed can be popular. I always use a runner and we toss it in the wash weekly.
I also made fleece dog toys (just fill with polyfill and maybe add a squeaker in it). Fleece is pretty indestructible for 'most' dogs. Our dogs still have their fleece toys 5 years later and still play with them. They're lightweight so they can be tossed around the house without breaking things.
Pets LOVE quilts and have quite good taste. I've had several people reply about how their pets really like having their own quilts/beds/places to sit/rest without getting in trouble.
Good luck and have fun!
