You don't want a heavy muslin. You want a high thread count muslin. The Kona I've had doesn't have a really fine weave. I've ordered high thread count muslin from thousandsofbolt and been very happy with the fineness of the weave.
You are right about the thread count of Kona. I had forgot about that part of photo transfer. It has been a few years since I did any photo transfer. I think that they recommended a white because the you would have a clearer end product. Should just google photo transfer for instructions.
