Denatured alcohol works very well on dried oil. You don't want it anywhere near your japanned machines but it's great for things like attachments and other easily removed metal parts. It also evaporates without leaving any residue.

This might be a dumb question but what's the difference between denatured and isopropyl alcohol? I use the 90% iso for cleaning fiddly bits.
