I realize this is a late response, but I wanted to add:
When I started fmq, I used what was available for my machine, a darning foot. It worked fine but after 3-4 months, it broke. I was in the middle of something so tried my open toe foot. My machine has a button to lower the feed dogs, and a dial to set the 'darning' tension. With both of those activated, my open toe worked just fine and I've been using it ever since.
(I read on the net that many people were experiencing a broken darning foot so I didn't even bother to replace it)
