Default Hello From Tennessee

I'm a newbie at quilting but am eager to get started. I plan to start small and work my way up since I always seem to be busy with some project or other with my embroidery machine. I hadn't sewed since my early days but now that I am sort of retired I have a renewed interest. I bought a combination sewing/embroidery machine last year and have been playing around with small projects to build up my skills. My next project is a quilted wall hanging that I want to make for my d-i-l as a Christmas gift.

I have a question...(which is why I even found this site)...what is the difference between regular thread, say dual duty, and quilting thread? Would it be ok to use quilting thread for any kind of project? I picked up a spool of quilting thread by mistake at my local fabric store and the lady said "that's quilting thread...do you want to change it?" I should have asked her but I felt kind of dumb. But if you don't know, you just plain ole don't know! Right? Thanks in advance for the info.

I look forward to exploring this forum and meeting some folks!
