I use painters tape because it eliminates marking on the quilt. I have used ordinary masking tape as well. I measure and mark with a pencil in the seam allowance along the quilt edge. I then use painters tape from mark to mark across the quilt. Once I've sewn a line in one direction, if possible I put the crosshatching bar on my machine and follow the first mark as my guide.
