I can't do that much hand sewing due to carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis in my right wrist and elbow. I have had a few quilts judged and gotten nice comments on how well I do it and it looks good.
I sew my bindings entirely by machine. I sew it to the back first and then turn over to the front and top stitch it down with either a straight or decorative stitch. The majority of my quilts are for 2 charities and get washed often, therefore the binding stitches must be secure.
