Even treadle sews backwards from what I can remember sewing on one. I don't think it's recommended to sew backwards for more then a dozen stitches on any machine using the reverse setting.
A treadle will only sew backwards if the feed dogs can be reversed, otherwise you just end up with a snarl. If a machine can do reverse stitching, you can sew in reverse for as long as you want. Why you would want to I don't know, but it's fine to do so.
