To answer the lathe question . It say south bend. but by SN 3 they say try Logan I never did that. I know very well because of who I bought from that it's a 1930's and looks just the same as a friends 30's south bend 12 x 48 made in the 30's. this one is a 10 x 48
I don't have a metal lathe (yet) You might want to visit OWWM. We have a metal section there along with the old woodworking machinery. I'm sure you would fit right in. They're the first forum I joined. I have a shop full of older woodworking equipment and far prefer it to the new stuff for all the same reasons I like old sewing machines.

I love your avatar. I like the old decal patterns and the peacock pattern on the Free machines is up there in my favorites along with the Scarab pattern on the Franklin machines.
