Lynnie, you don't really need the 2-1/2" ruler (but they are handy!) if you do it the conventional way: Cut (12) 3" squares from each fabric and create the HSTs as you did in step 1. You would have to manipulate whatever size ruler you have to trim out the 2-1/2" squares.
