4-1/4" square if you machine sews a generous 1/4 inch. Otherwise a 4-1/8th. I went with 4-1/4" and had to trim slivers off. But I'd rather trim than be too small.

I decided to go with the 4 at a time flying geese. The method I use is crazy accurate and I hardly have to trim. It's the second method in this tute: http://www.connectingthreads.com/tut...hods__D15.html
For the 4-1/2" size we are using, cut the large square at 5-1/4" and the small squares at 2-7/8".
