You never know when a thread on this board can be very important to someone.
To explain.....I am a retired accountant. For all my quilting years I have not been able to do really scrappy quilts. This thread really has helped me understand that my brain must see order. My quilts can be scappy, but only a few colors and many shades of those colors. My quilts can be off center, but must be a controlled off-center. I like modern, because they are big pieces of fabric and not so many little pieces, which begin to look like a jumble to me.
From all these discussions, it appears that math people are similar to me. They want control with order. Also, I've looked at some of the quilts with numbers, they are like chaos to my eyes and may be for the young man receiving your quilt.
If it were me, I would make what most young people going to college want. Find fabrics for the university he is going to or just use the colors in a simple pattern and put the letters of the school in the middle. This way, if he changes his major, he won't have to continually explain the quilt, and he will ALWAYS love the school quilt. So will everyone he goes to school with. Make sure you put his name or initials predominately somewhere on the quilt where it can't be gotten rid of easily.
I will really enjoy seeing what you decide to make.
