I'd make what I liked and wouldn't worry what anyone else thought. She's not the first to com up with the brilliant idea to use red and white in a 2 color quilt! I haven't taken a quilt class in a long time but then and even from what I see now in classes people often want identical fabrics to the teacher's sample...some are totally crushed and lost when the shop says they're out of the fabric...same as seeing a pattern or pattern in a book! some just can't see another combination..and others can see another but like the one they're already seeing better.
