I love your story. We have tree frogs around our house. Every time it rains you hear them singing, and they get pretty loud. We have a family of squirrels that we feed sunflower seeds all year round. We keep the bag in the garage. You guessed it, we didn't put the seeds out early enough, so they were in the bag getting their own supply.
