You can use almost any thread in any machine. Sometimes you need an individual free standing thread cone holder, similar to this one made by someone.

I like the idea of the home made holder using a cd spindle. I wonder what else would work. I have one like the EBay items. For it to work, I have to get the thread up so, I raise the carry handle on my machine and let it act as part of the unit. The thread goes off the cone, up through the eye, then over the handle, then into the machine and out the needle.
