No, it is ***unwaxed*** dental floss that is recommended for cleaning the upper tension discs. You floss the discs similar to how you would floss teeth. It's important not to use wax (waxed dental floss *or* waxed hand quilting thread) in a machine; it gunks up the tension.

The magnifying glass is a really good idea. It takes only a tiny bit of thread or lint caught where it shouldn't be to cause problems.
