My grandmother alwasy started with a corner (safty pin in the corner) and stuffed it into a pillow case. When it came out of the case the pin was moved to the next corner to the right. I have the quilt that I made 50 years ago and there are now creases in the quilt. There are some stains though from use.
That is how I was taught,
stuff them in pillow cases. I've never had creases in a quilt when done this way. The idea of using the safety pin in a corner is a good one.
