One pattern I love is the split nine patch. My first one was 2 1/2" hst, 2 1/2" sq. Look at Bonnie Hunter's site and look for her leader/ender from last year. It's just like a log cabin and you can use all those layouts and more. I'll try and show mine, I saw it on quiltville - it looks like a dahlia to me.
