If you want a specific design and can't find a marking method over different fabrics, you could do tissue paper patterns. Stack up several layers of tissue paper and staple or pin the corners together. Mark the design in pencil on the first layer. Use your sewing machine with no thread in it to stitch out the design with a larger stitch length. You will have several copies of the design and you just remove the staples in the corners and pin one layer of tissue to your quilt and stitch through it following the needle holes. The tissue tears away easily.
