Agree that these are squares (8 patch) set on the diagonal. Look at the picture and isolate each block by color. One block has brown/cream and the other is red/cream. Then look at the individual red or brown block divided into four quadrants. It's actually a very simple block to make. You should be able to draft it out without any problems. 2.5 inch strips would work well, each finished block would be 8 inches. You can do some strip piecing of some of the block components and it should go together pretty easily. I love what setting the blocks on the diagonal does for this quilt.
