Since you´re thinking out loud there goes my five cents:

1 - Yes, its easier than EPP. You stitch and its done.
2 - Printing is same as printing photos on fabric, fabric labels, etc.
3 - The software uses very little ink, cartridges last long.
4 - Precut ends beeing more expensive because with the software (depending on the shape) you get a number of shapes in 3-4 sizes.
I´m hand piecing 3" hexagons right now for a queen size with lots of different patterns and colors.
You could download a free shape and try it.
And no, no jam ruins a printer !
