I've been there many times. There is no need to book a tour. The colonial part doesn't allow any vehicle traffic so you have to walk, but a tour guide wouldn't be useful since there are presentations in the buildings by the staff members that work there. There are several plantations in the surrounding area but you can easily drive there yourself. All the local hotels will have literature about them and that will include a map. Since the town of Williamsburg is not that big, traffic is not an issue and you can get just about anywhere there in 10 minutes or less. You will love touring the colonial village at Christmas and if you are there the first weekend, they have the "Grand Illumination" which is their big holiday kick-off and is absolutely beautiful. Have fun!!
