fiskars has a small size scissors that are sharp enough to get the job done, bit a manageable size for small hands. a size 28 rotarycutter should be usable for an 8yr old, with you right there, and an 18x4acrylic ruler should be a good size. my 8yr old dgd is also all afire to start quilting.
