I Greetings from outside Sacramento, CA. If you want to make a crazy quilt, I'd recommend using the foundation method where you sew your fancy fabrics to a foundation of muslin. That way nothing stretches/distorts, the weight of your fancy fabrics don't matter, and it gives you a great stable base for the embellishments/embroidery.
