Odessa Quilts, you are truly a neighbor! I took your advice and started looking for another pattern. I think I've settled on the Log Cabin. I would like to hand piece the whole quilt. I don't know what you call it but I'm going to try to make the squares with the batting & backing all done at once (if that makes sense). I was ready to give it a 'whirl' then remembered that I didn't buy any material for backing, or thread.

Good for you! What colors are you planning to use? Log Cabin is a good choice for a newbie; straight lines, and if your cutting and stitching is accurate, it should look really great.
I believe the technique you mentioned is called "quilt-as-you-go", at least that's what I've always called it. Do you have a favorite shop in the area? If not, and you're feeling adventurous, come to downtown Bay City and visit the Fabric Fair on 5th Street. They're excellent and oh-so-helpful. I know several of the employees and they're wonderful. They'll take really good care of you.
