I spray the backing first, generally in sections as it's easier to work with. Once the backing is attached to the batting, I spray the batting and go through the same process with quilt top. Always leave the spray basting for a few minutes until it's tacky. I always machine quilt and some of the spray basting attaches to the needle. I just clean it off as I go.
