I agree with larger needle eye and, preferably, a metallic needle. If you have the ability to do so, slow your machine down. Also give your thread a long thread path to remove any kinks in it. On a domestic embroidery machine, you can put the spool in a glass and put it a foot or two away from the normal spot the thead sits.
Also so note that if you aren't successful, don't give up! There are lots of metallic thread brands, and some work better than others. I have used a number of different ones, but I prefer Yenmet. YMMV.
