I have used iron cleaner (tube from JoAnn's), but salt spread on a paper bag is supposed to work also.
Parchment paper protects the iron. When ironing fusible, I always put a sheet of parchment paper on top before ironing. It's inexpensive too! Works just as well as the more expensive applique sheets, and it's so inexpensive it's disposable.
