with any new (to you or me) machine, a manual is essential -- having you to guide her would be an even bigger plus -- reading and following instructions and having an experienced sewing machine operator available could make sewing really enjoyable!!-- you're right in that she would probably enjoy the machine with fancy stitches and some more modern thingys (thingies??)!!
