I use poor man's red snappers and they do work. For me, I find it helps to pin every few inches before snapping in the outer tubes. They don't work well with flannel since it is thicker than cotton. Also the snapper on the top edge does take up space in the throat space of the machine. It's not a problem with the bottom edge of the backing, though.
